Magnetic
resonance imaging uses two harmless
forces - magnetic fields and radio waves - to produce
two or three dimensional pictures
of the
body,
allowing
physicians
to provide an accurate diagnosis of your medical problem. Scans performed
with the use of magnetic resonance imaging are painless and have no known
harmful side effects.
No radiation is used during imaging, and the procedure is a non-invasive
technique that does not require hospitalization. Magnetic resonance imaging
takes between 20-30 minutes, depending on
the type of information requested by your physician. Samples
of different areas of the body scanned using magnetic resonance imaging
can be seen above.
The Imaging Center's new magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner is a short bore, large aperture, 1.5 Tesla magnet capable of performing spectroscopy, diffusion, and perfusion studies. This scanner is one of the most advanced scanners in the world. Its speed and open design help to ease the feeling of claustrophobia that may be experienced by some patients while undergoing magnetic resonance imaging. Mild sedation is available upon request.
Before Your MRI Scan
If sedation is requested, you will need to arrive at the Imaging Center 30 minutes before your scheduled appointment. You will be given a dose of Valium to help you feel calm and relaxed during the magnetic resonance imaging procedure. Limited activity for four hours after imaging with sedation is recommended, and It will be necessary to bring a driver with you for the ride home. Because of the magnetic force used in magnetic resonance imaging, you should inform your physician and our staff if you have had any brain, ear, eye, heart, or other surgeries, or if you have any of the following:
You should also notify your physician and MRI technician if you might be pregnant. You will be asked to leave jewelry, keys, credit cards, watches, and other metal objects for safekeeping in a locked area to avoid interference with the magnetic field. All patients must change into a gown for MRI scans. There are no special preparations required for MRI unless your doctor has informed you otherwise. If you have any questions or concerns about your visit for MRI, do not hesitate to give us a call.
Please note: All billing for the Imaging Center is done under the radiologist as the provider. It is the patients responsibility to make sure their scans are covered by their insurance.
