When you make an appointment with a physician at Western
Neurological Associates, you will spend some of your appointment time
with one of our midlevel providers. Western Neurological employs two
types of midlevel providers – Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) and
Physician Assistant (PA).
What is a Midlevel Provider?
Family Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants are
licensed healthcare providers who practice medicine under the
supervision of a physician. These highly skilled professionals are
educated and trained to perform the same medical procedures as their
physician counterparts.
Family Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants must
complete specialized course work and pass stringent national
certification examinations to become accredited and certified. In order
to maintain certification, an FNP and a PA must complete specific
numbers of hours of Continuing Medical Education (CME) as well as
successfully pass national recertification exams. All midlevel
providers at Western Neurological are certified.
What is the Role of Midlevel Providers at WNA?
During a neurological consultation, a midlevel provider
will take your vital signs, obtain your medical history and current
symptoms and perform a physical examination. She will discuss this
information with the doctor who will be seeing you. After the doctor
meets with you, a plan will be made for your medical treatment.
The midlevel provider works closely with your physician in
diagnosing and treating illnesses as well as prescribing medications.
She may be the person who calls you with test results or other
information and take your phone call if you have a question about your
medical treatment or new information concerning your condition. The
midlevel provider may see you in follow up well as perform medical
procedures such as lumbar puncture.
Whether you are seeing one of our physicians or a midlevel provider, you will always receive the highest quality care possible.
